The Denver Broncos took the field for their first day of practice for mandatory minicamp and Bo Nix was back on the field for the first time since having ankle surgery.
Following practice, Nix to put to rest any outside concerns and shared insight into what led to the more recent cleanup procedure.
Bo Nix returns for Day 1 of Denver Broncos minicamp
It was a welcome sight on Tuesday morning as Bo Nix took the field in a helmet and jersey, participating in team stretch, quarterback drills, and then group work with wide receivers and running backs.
milehighsports.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/BLUEKSY-RE.mp4He threw quite a bit during these periods, but did not participate in any team drills as the Broncos are bringing him along. We know that Nix will be fully cleared before training camp even begins, but if it were up to Bo he’d be full go right now.
“Yes, I could go full go right now if they wanted me to,” Nix said.
What ultimately led to the cleanup procedure just over a month and a half ago was a bone spur that was giving him some discomfort. Nix said that it’s something he could have played on all season, but because he was so far ahead in his rehab, he wanted to get it removed so that he could be pain-free all season.
“The first one obviously right after the season, non-weight bearing for a couple of weeks, get back going,” Nix said. “I felt pretty good. Still had a little bit of an issue with bone spurs, so what we did was, even though I probably could have gone again, done it, done the whole season again, it was just aggravating me for too long. So, what we did was, since I was a little bit ahead, thought it was best to go ahead and decompress it a little bit and then still have plenty of time to get back for the summer, to prepare for the season.”
Bo’s doctors told him his ankle looks good as new. One thing Sean Payton said to us last week is that Bo’s mobility and how it’s used within the offense isn’t going to change. Bo confirmed that on Tuesday.
“Well, my concern is, they say it’s back healthy as good as new,” Bo joked. “I hadn’t really been like that in a couple of years, so my concern is maybe I’ll move around a bit better.”
Jaylen Waddle’s explosive element is huge for Broncos offense
Jaylen Waddle has been the talk of Denver since arriving via trade and in the practices we’ve been able to see, it’s easy to see that he’ll be a needle mover for the offense.
“There’s an element of explosiveness that I think as an offense, we’ve lacked for a couple of years,” Nix said of Waddle. “We’ve had plenty of explosive plays, plenty of points, all that kind of stuff. We’ve made great strides, but there is a level of explosiveness that a guy like that adds. You could be 1st and 10 starting a drive and go one and done because he takes it 75-80 yards. That’s the kind of weapon that we added, and that’s what I think we’ve all been out here watching and really enjoying watching and just seeing him move and run around. You just can’t replace speed and that’s just what he brings to the table.”
With how Waddle moves, he can beat any coverage and create separation. His ability to stop on a dime has been impressive to watch at practice, and it should create more one-on-one opportunities for Courtland Sutton.
“He’s extremely fast with the ball in his hands,” Nix said. “It looks like he doesn’t really slow down to make cuts, which is pretty tough to do for a fast guy, but he’s going to add an element of relief for everybody else. Take a little bit of the touches so that other guys don’t have to take them all. And once those guys take them, they’re fresh and ready to take them. I think a guy like that just makes everybody on offense better, then it obviously helps the defense in the same way.”
Broncos pass rush not lacking in depth department
It’s hard at times to evaluate certain positions during this portion of the offseason because of the lack of pads and physical contact, but the flash of the Broncos pass rush led by Nik Bonitto, Jonah Elliss, Dondrea Tillman, and Que Robinson has been something that has stood out dating back to OTAs.
Elliss, Tillman, and Robinson are all getting more reps as the team excused outside linebacker Jonathon Cooper from being at practice amidst his ongoing legal issues.
“Those guys are all getting the work, getting the snaps,” Payton said. “It’s just so hard for them in these non-padded practices to get the true evaluation. So without me trying to just create nice words… They know what they’re doing. I think for those guys, it becomes a little bit more clear with the pads on.”
Even without pads, those players and Bonitto have had no issue timing the snap, bursting with their first step, and then playing their pursuit angles, getting to the quarterback.
Payton addressed Cooper’s ongoing legal issues after the conclusion of practice today.
“Relative to [OLB] Jonathon Cooper,” Payton said. “We have excused him from this mini camp. He’s taking this time, obviously… He’s got to work on himself. The club is very much in tune to the league office, local authorities here, and we’ve had several meetings. Clearly from an ownership standpoint, head coach, organizationally… There’s a bar that we have, and an expectation that we have, that’s very high. We’ll consider all of that as we continue to gather the information. That’s really all I can tell you. I think it’ll take a little bit of time, but we’re continuing to go through that process, and we take it very seriously.”
Day 2 of minicamp continues tomorrow and we’ll have you covered every step of the way.
