‘You want to live across the street from six boarded-up homes?’ Neighbors want county-owned zombie-like houses near airport gone ...Middle East

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Monroe County owns five boarded-up homes next to the Frederick Douglass Airport runways that have become magnets for wildlife and squatters.

Zombie-like homes

The county has been buying up these properties for 20 years because they sit right next to the airport runways. The FAA recommends airports do this, but the homes now look like zombie houses.

After neighbors complained to Chief Investigative Reporter Berkeley Brean, he got a commitment from the airport to tear them down.

“It’s been a lot of years and if they’re not going to do anything with them, tear them down,” said Chris Judd, who lives on Beahan Road in Chili.

Judd’s sits across he road from the homes.

“We’ve seen squatters go into the yellow house. I haven’t seen anyone go into this one,” Judd said pointing to a white boarded-up home.

But he says the animals do. The windows are covered with plywood and wires are down on the ground.

Properties boarder the airport runways

Google Earth shows just how close the properties are to the main runways. Real estate and tax records show the county owns five homes and spent almost $335,000 to buy them. But they sit boarded-up, side by side and empty.

“You’ve got a boarded-up home here. You want to live across the street from six boarded-up homes?” Judd said.

Airport apologizes

Andy Moore is the airport director. He says they’ve been working on the environmental concerns of getting rid of the houses since the winter.

“But ultimately my commitment is to have those properties down, completely taken care of within the next year,” Moore said.

Brean asked Moore about the condition of the homes.

“So I apologize for the conditions of the homes. I certainly understand they are unsightly and quite honestly an eye-sore,” Moore said. “This project will be moved at a higher priority to get it done within the next year.”

The airport director says they’ve had major projects that took priority. But the boarded-up homes are now on the priority list.
