ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The First Alert Weather team has issued a Yellow Alert for Thursday. This will start just after midnight Wednesday night as leftover storms from the Midwest approach our area. While we don’t anticipate severe storms in our area, we could see some thundery downpours, and some gusty winds. Some of these winds may be just strong enough to produce isolated power outages. The timing of this first round looks to be around 2am – 6am Thursday morning.
Then, widespread winds will become more of a factor on Thursday as the main batch of rain/storms and cold front move through. Winds will begin to gust 45-55 mph out of the southwest. It appears the strongest winds will focus from Buffalo to Rochester along the Thruway corridor. Again, some of these gusts may be strong enough to produce some minor damage or outages. While the thunderstorm threat looks fairly low on Thursday, we may see an isolated gusty storm, especially in the Finger Lakes mid to late morning into the early afternoon. Our active weather should wind down Thursday evening, at which point our Yellow Alert would be dropped.
Before the Yellow Alert, we’ll see another fairly pleasant day on Wednesday with a good deal of sun, seasonably warm air a few scattered showers. There is the chance for a few isolated thunderstorms during the afternoon, especially east of Rochester and into the Finger Lakes.
