CPD fire shots at man after deadly shooting, police chase in Uptown ...Middle East

News by : (NBC Chicago) -

A chaotic scene unfolded Monday night in Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood after an argument between two men led to a deadly shooting and then a police pursuit, with Chicago police also firing shots and a suspect in critical condition.

A preliminary statement from the Chicago Police Department said the incident began about 8:22 p.m. in the 1400 block of West Argyle Street, when officers assigned to the 20th District heard a call of shots fired.

An initial investigation indicated a 63-year-old man was involved in a verbal argument with another known man, CPD said. As the altercation continued, the man produced a gun and fired shots, striking the 63-year-old multiple times in the body.

The victim was transported to a nearby hospital where he was later pronounced dead, CPD said.

After the shooting, the suspect fled on foot northbound on near the 4800 block of North Clark Street, and brief police pursuit ensued. Officers then located the suspect in the 1400 block of West Argyle Street.

According to CPD, the suspect then turned and raised his firearm in the direction of the officers. Officers then fired shots at the man and struck him.

The suspect was transported to a nearby hospital where he was last listed in critical condition, police said. Three CPD officers were also transported to a nearby hospital for observation and were in good condition. Those officers will be placed on routine administrative duties for the next 30 days per department policy.

A firearm was recovered from the scene, police said.

Videos and photo captured from the scene showed a large police response in the neighborhood, with multiple officers, police tape and police cars closing off streets as people walking by looked on.

Nearby neighborhood bar The SoFo Tap, located at 4923 N. Clark St. in Andersonville, posted about the incident to social media Monday night, saying some entrances to the bar were closed because of the heavy police presence nearby.

“The incident did not involve The SoFo Tap and our team and customers are safe,” the post said. “At present access to The SoFo Tap is closed as the area round the bar is an active crime scene. We ask that folks please respect the situation and avoid the area at Clark & Argyle this evening.”

According to CPD, the Investigative Response Team was investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. The Civilian Office of Police Accountability, which responds anytime a CPD officer fires their weapon, was also notified.
