The First MLB All-Star Game Voting Update Has No Cubs Remotely Close to the Top (No, Not Even PCA) ...Middle East

Major League Baseball All-Star balloting has long been as much a proxy for fan-team enthusiasm as it has been for a meaningful evaluation of performance. I don’t mind that reality (it’s just a fan exhibition event after all), but sometimes it tells a jarring story.

Which is not the same thing as a surprising story, mind you. It’s just jarring to see Cubs fan enthusiasm so dampened at the moment that not even Pete Crow-Armstrong – as obvious of an All-Star as you’ll get right now – is not even remotely CLOSE to being in an All-Star position in the initial drop of this year’s fan voting:

(via MLB)

There you see PCA with barely half as many votes as Jordan Walker (also a deserving All-Star, for the record), and only about 1/3 of the leader, Andy Pages. There’s lots of catch-up time, but, historically, these tend not to diverge too wildly in subsequent votes.

Other Cubs hitters are so far back that they honestly do not merit mention here. Nothing to see there.

Mostly what you see there is how happy and enthusiastic Dodgers and Phillies fans are right now. Bully for them. (The Phillies are also getting a bump in enthusiasm, I presume, from hosting the game this year.)

The Cubs will have at least one All-Star this summer, what with the rules commanding it. I am certain PCA will get a nod if he continues to perform as he has. There are arguably some other deserving Cubs, including Ben Brown and Michael Busch, but I think it’ll probably take a continuation of some extremely strong performances to get them in (crowded fields this year).
