Phillies Searching For Outfield Help ...Middle East

News by : (MLBtraderumors) -

The Phillies are keeping tabs on the outfield market, including Jo Adell of the Angels and Seiya Suzuki of the Cubs, per Bob Nightengale of USA Today. Philadelphia placed everyday right fielder Adolis Garcia on the 60-day IL on Friday with a torn lat. The club lost center fielder Johan Rojas to elbow surgery earlier that day.

The 27-year-old Adell is in his second-to-last year of arbitration. He agreed to a $5.2MM salary with the club for this season. Adell finally flashed the tools that made him one of the top prospects in the Angels system, launching 37 home runs as a fixture in the middle of the lineup in 2025.

Adell hasn’t shown the same thump this year. He’s popped 10 home runs in 301 plate appearances. The righty bat has trimmed his strikeout rate to a career-low 22.9%, but it’s come with a sharp decline in ISO and SLG.

With Mike Trout back in center field, Adell has taken up residence in the corners, where he’s been more comfortable. Adell struggled to -13 Defensive Runs Saved as the Angels’ primary center fielder in 2025. He’s posted a -1 DRS between left and right field this season. Adell has been a positive defender in right for his career.

Suzuki is in the final season of the five-year, $85MM agreement he signed with Chicago in 2022. He’s making $18MM this year. The Cubs didn’t seem like sellers through April, but a rough six-week stretch has the team sitting in third place in a competitive NL Central. Parting with a pending free agent like Suzuki would make sense if the Cubs slip out of the playoff race.

The 31-year-old Suzuki missed the first couple of weeks of the season with a knee injury suffered during the World Baseball Classic. He hit the ground running once he returned, slashing .328/.430/.567 in April. The veteran’s production swooned in May. Suzuki posted a .551 OPS last month. He’s picked things back up in June, hitting .306 with three home runs in 11 games.

Suzuki is having a bounce-back campaign in the field. After stumbling to a -5 DRS last season, he’s put together a 7 DRS through 438 2/3 innings this year. Suzuki has strictly played right field in 2026. He’s earned strong marks for his range and his arm.

It’s probably not a coincidence that the Phillies are specifically interested in right fielders, with Garcia going down. The longtime Ranger joined the team on a one-year, $10 million deal as a replacement for Nick Castellanos. He had been scuffling through his worst season as a full-time player before going down with the lat injury, recording a 66 wRC+ through 259 plate appearances.

Rojas hasn’t contributed to the big-league club at all this year after getting hit with an 80-game suspension for PEDs in March. He was working his way back into playing shape when elbow soreness arose. Rojas will miss the rest of the season after imaging showed a tear in his UCL. He’s expected to be ready for Spring Training next year.

Philly has already made one move to address its outfield needs, though it was much smaller than a potential Adell or Suzuki deal. The club acquired outfielder Derek Hill from the White Sox for a couple of prospects last week. The veteran started in center field in both games over the weekend against the Brewers. He picked up a hit in each matchup. Those two games came against left-handed starters, pushing Justin Crawford to the bench.
