On the one hand, FINALLY winning a series is a relief. The Cubs hadn’t won one in their last 10 tries, which makes sense in retrospect, since this season has been all about streaks of 10. But on the other hand, it would’ve felt more corner-turny if the Cubs had swept the Giants, put together a four-game winning streak (the minimum size of a true winning streak in my completely-made-up-on-the-spot estimation), and then hosted the Rockies at Wrigley Field tonight with a chance to really extend it. As we’ve discussed, Colin Rea is here to be a swing guy, doing what is needed, and being close to average overall. You are not expecting him to out-duel Logan Webb; just give the Cubs a chance. Of late, though, Rea has been accomplishing that goal a little less frequently. His first five outings on the year were outstanding, but since then, not only is the ERA a whopping 6.48, but, out of those 10 games, half have been total clunkers. And, of the five that weren’t, he allowed 1 to 3 runs, while lasting 5 to 7 innings. That’s obviously where you want him to be, but even that isn’t a guy who takes over a game once in a while (which is what could’ve otherwise offset the clunkers). “Just not getting it done, really. I just need to be better,” Rea said, per the Sun-Times. “I’m not seeming to be making pitches when I need to. … There was good and bad [on this road trip]. For the most part, we pitched really well, besides me. The two starts I had on the road weren’t very good.” If you want to levy a defense of Rea, it’d probably look at the match-ups and say three of the five clunkers came at the Dodgers, at the Braves, and at Coors Field, so that’s kinda understandable. That said, overall, the ERA is now up to 5.35 on the season for Colin Rea, about 31% below league average by ERA-. Were it that the Cubs hadn’t suffered so many injuries, I wonder if we would’ve seen him moved to the bullpen at some point, where he might well be more valuable to this group. Unfortunately, the injuries have staggered themselves juuuuuust so there never really has been an opportunity to make a change. It likely won’t come up again until Matthew Boyd is back. Speaking of Boyd, Craig Counsell has said the lefty could have a bullpen session early in the homestand. So, maybe today or tomorrow? That’ll tell the Cubs a lot about the state of that shoulder, which is what sat Boyd back down after he was so close to returning from the knee surgery. Even if he feels great, it’s really difficult to predict whether that means he could return for a short start soon thereafter, or whether it’ll require a fresh rehab stint. Ryan Rolison had another nice outing, this time opening for Rea. He’s down to a 2.13 ERA over 25.1 innings. As we’ve discussed, the walk rate is still too high (12.0%) and the strikeout rate could be a bit higher if he wants to be a leverage guy (24.0%), but you can do a lot of damage as a pitcher if you’re sporting a 50.0% groundball rate like he is. I have very much enjoyed watching him develop this year. As he rounded the bases after hitting his first career home run (a tank to straightaway center field, batting as a righty by the way), Pedro Ramirez was thinking mostly about his mom, hoping she was watching. That’s awfully sweet. She was, by the way. (Sun-Times) New I-Cubs reliever Antoine Kelly (acquired last week from the Dodgers for cash) rounded up to 100 mph yesterday, for what that’s worth. The big lefty was a name prospect a few years ago, but shoulder issues seem to have slowed him. Still, he is only 26, and if he’s back up near triple digits on the regular, that’s a guy worth watching. Of course, he’s gotta get his walk rate under control or none of it will matter (there’s a reason, for example, that the Dodgers were willing to move on).New Iowa Cub Antoine Kelly was awesome in Iowa last night. 4 strikeouts and no walks in 2 innings on just 24 pitches. 6 whiffs. And he threw his hardest pitch of the year at 99.8mph while averaging 98.6 on the 4-seam (1.8mph harder than he averaged with dodgers)

— Jomboy Media (@JomboyMedia) June 14, 2026 To his credit, Yohan Ramirez completed the strikeout thereafter. The Brewers are calling up shortstop prospect Cooper Pratt, he of the big pre-debut extension. The 21-year-old shortstop is seen as a plus defender with good speed and an average or better bat. He’s played young for his level in the minors consistently, and so, although he has never raked, I think most believe he projects a little better long-term offensively than he has yet shown. Still, you wouldn’t necessarily bet on him to be a big offensive impact this year for the Brewers. Then again, you know, Brewers. So anything is possible. Jose Ramirez has a hamate fracture, which is a bummer, because he’s been having a rare down year and his might further hamper his ability to get back on track. The Rockies set a club record for runs by scoring 23 yesterday. Makes sense, since they play at Coors Fi…. oh. It was in Las Vegas. The ROCKIES just scored more in Las Vegas than they ever scored at COORS FIELD. So, yeah, we’ll see what happens to offense when the A’s move to Vegas permanently. Here’s hoping that new ballpark is well structured to be a little less absurd than the Triple-A park.
