Less than two months ago, Donald Trump strolled across the White House lawn chatting with King Charles and Queen Camilla – a scene of calm diplomacy in the spring sunshine.
Last night the same lawn saw a different vision of American power.
In a joint celebration of the President’s 80th birthday, and the nation’s upcoming 250th, the White House became the scene of a cage-fighting contest for the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Freedom 250 event.
The brashness and machismo of the UFC contest was pure Trump, complete with a motorbike circus, military flypast and fireworks to entertain the thousands of spectators in between the rounds of mixed martial arts.
But this was entertainment with a purpose – projecting a vision of Trump’s America to the country and the world, and rewarding his supporters with a night to remember where they could revel in their version of patriotism.
And while the fighting delivered its fair share of shocks, many of the most astonishing moments of the night came from outside the ring.

American heavyweight UFC fighter Josh Hokit swiftly defeated his opponent in the ring, winning with a round two knockout against Derrick Lewis, also from the US. After leaving the ring, Hokit, a former college football player, paid homage to his host by presenting President Trump with a medallion.
He addressed the audience with a rambling and expletive-laden victory speech praising the President. “I’m the man with the plan, the beast that’s ready to feast,” he told podcaster Joe Rogan. “You know what? F*** the speech. Shoutout to Trump for having the balls to put some s*** like this on.”
He went on to say “there’s only one person more incredible than the ‘Incredible Hok’, and that’s my Lord and saviour Jesus Christ”.
However, the controversial fighter signed off with a staple of the many Maga conspiracy theories, this one aimed at Michelle Obama, wife of the former president Barack, who has been a frequent target of Trump’s vitriol.
“Michelle Obama is a man, am I right America?”
Some sections of the crowd cheered the remarks, while others looked shocked and booed. According to CNN, Trump was spotted smiling briefly following the remark.
UFC star detained trying to crash the event
Middleweight champion Sean Strickland, previously a firm supporter of President Trump, was not expected at the event.

Security staff quickly stepped in and escorted the fighter away, with Strickland later posting that he “may have been charged with disorderly conduct. I don’t know what that is, but it sounds cool.”
Tyson Fury’s cap
The British boxing champion Tyson Fury used the White House event to promote his own big fight, the proposed contest with rival Anthony Joshua.
But it was his headwear that drew the attention of onlookers with the slogan “Donald Trump for Prime Minister” emblazoned on his cap between flags of the United States and United Kingdom.

In the past the “Gypsy King” has used Trumpian language to describe his own battles saying: “Like Donald Trump wants to make America great again, I want to make boxing great again.”
A military recruitment event
On the same day Trump was hoping to finalise a ceasefire deal with Iran following months of conflict, the UFC 250 event was full of military pageantry and rousing calls to patriotism.
A flypast of fighter jets kicked off the evening, and the fighters taking part were escorted into the arena by decorated members of the armed forces as well as emergency services personnel.

— Pete Hegseth (@PeteHegseth) June 13, 2026Both Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, and Secretary of Defence, Pete Hegseth, were in attendance. And the Department of Defence – renamed the Department of War by Trump – used the occasion to screen a stirring recruitment advert urging young Americans to “Join the Fight”.
The advert, which was also broadcast on TV and social media, shows armed forces personnel training, jumping out of planes and storming beaches.
Trump posted about the advert on Truth Social with his thoughts. “This Sunday Night, during the historic Freedom 250 UFC Fight at the White House, The Department of War will debut their first TV Ad, entitled ‘Peace Through Strength.’ WATCH IT BELOW. The Warrior Ethos is BACK at the War Department, and we call on our greatest young Americans to join our Great Fighting (when necessary!) Machine. President DONALD J. TRUMP,” he wrote.

In Maga world, petrol heads rule, and the UFC 250 event would not have been complete without a display of horsepower.
Motorbike stunt riders from Nitro Circus flipped and jumped across the White House lawn with the Stars and Stripes fluttering in the background and in front to US marines and their military hardware.
