The San Francisco 49ers are still trying to get healthy. To name a few, both Nick Bosa and Mykel Williams are recovering from knee injuries, and George Kittle had that nasty Achilles tear in the NFC Wildcard. It’s a fair question about who will be around in Week 1.
Luckily, Kittle looks like he’s on pace.

Joining The Insiders on Saturday, 49ers fullback Kyle Juszczyk gave a positive update on George Kittle’s status:
George looks great. As he mentioned a couple of days ago, he really is ahead of schedule. He was impressive just last week, seeing him running zig-zag, like making cuts, actually hitting, like, 16 miles per hour or something like that. I’ve been super impressed. He’s got another two months or so to get even better.
“It’s been enjoyable to watch him go through this process because he attacks it as such a professional. He makes it a point to, no matter what we’re doing, even when we’re down in Cabo and we’re celebrating McCaffrey’s birthday, and we’re golfing, that guy finds his time to rehab. Whether it’s early in the morning, late at night, he is always, always grinding. It’s always on the back of his mind, and I really do think he’s going to beat some expected timetables. When he does come back, whenever that is, I think he’s going to come out there and be the George Kittle we all know and love.
Kittle has been working his tail off in rehab to get back to the 49ers by Week 1—he said so himself. To hear from his teammate that he’s clocking 16 miles per hour is definitely the right direction. Without Kittle, the 49ers may be relying on Jake Tonges to start the season. Tonges is no scrub, but no one can replace Kittle, both for the player he is and the energy he brings to the team when he’s in the game.
Unfortunately, as Nicholas mentioned, the start of the 49ers’ schedule for 2026 isn’t exactly the most friendly for a player in Kittle’s state of rehab. The best course of action is not to hope for Week 1, but to be confident that Kittle is progressing and should have few setbacks once he finally hits the field.
