More than 80,000 Chicago-area and northwest Indiana residents continued to remain without power on Saturday following intense storms – including multiple tornadoes – that ripped through the area earlier this week, destroying homes, uprooting trees and downing power lines.
As of 9:36 a.m., more than 68,000 ComEd customers were without power across northern Illinois, according to the utility’s outage map. The bulk of the outages were reported in Chicago, with more than 24,000 customers affected citywide, followed by Oak Lawn and Hickory Hills; 6,466 and 5,546 customers were without electricity in those areas, respectively.
In a message posted on its website, ComEd said restoration efforts were focused on the hardest-hit areas, supported by more than 3,000 employees, 2,200 contractors and additional crews.
“We understand being without power is challenging and appreciate your patience as crews work around the clock,” its statement read, in part.
More than 621,000 customers had been restored as of 8 a.m.
In northwest Indiana, more than 25,000 residents remained without power. NIPSCO reported more than 29,000 customers were without electricity in its coverage area, including more than 13,000 in northwest Indiana alone.
