The Minya Veterinary Medicine Directorate has finalized plans to establish the governorate’s first dedicated stray dog shelter and sterilization center in northern Minya – marking a major shift toward humane animal population management in Egypt.
The facility aims to curb the recent surge in stray animal numbers through targeted sterilization and mass vaccination campaigns.
By focusing on population control and anti-rabies inoculations, veterinary authorities aim to build “herd immunity” to completely eradicate rabies across the region.
Lands have already been allocated to expand this network of shelters in the near future.
According to the Director of the Minya Veterinary Medicine Directorate, Ramadan Tawfik, this initiative aligns with Egypt’s broader national policy to ethically manage stray animal populations, halt rapid reproduction rates, and secure public health against rabies.
A 150-kilometer breeding ground
The push for a humane shelter comes on the heels of alarming field data collected by local veterinary teams.
Surveillance reports reveal a massive population spike stretching 150 kilometers long and 50 kilometers wide—spanning from El Idwa in the north all the way to Deir Mawas in the south.
Field investigators tracked the root of the crisis directly to unmanaged waste. Accumulations of garbage and environmental pollution near the Eastern and Western Desert Roads have effectively created ideal breeding grounds.
As stray dogs congregate around these food sources, reproduction rates have spiked dramatically.
The environmental link
Tawfik emphasized that solving the stray dog crisis requires looking beyond animal control alone.
He joined veterinary field experts in calling for a rigorous, coordinated state sanitation campaign to eliminate illegal dumping sites.
Authorities warned that sustained environmental pollution not only drives up stray dog numbers but also fuels the spread of other dangerous pests, including rodents, scorpions, and snakes – posing a direct threat to public safety.
