NJCAA diving champion Justin Halford will join the Cal men for the upcoming 2026-2027 season. Halford spent the 2023-2024 and 2024-2025 seasons at Indian River State College. According to his Instagram bio, Halford plans to be with Cal through 2028.
“If you would’ve told little me I would move across the country to Florida, walk onto a juco dive team, then 3 years later go to Cal freakin Berkeley. Man. What an incredible journey this has been. I genuinely love this sport with everything I have. I’ve navigated my entire adult life around this sport and like most others, has dedicated every waking day to diving in one form, way, or another. I love how complex and difficult this sport has become as I’ve progressed. I love the process it takes to get better. To watch that happen over the course of time, your hard work paying off in little wins that only you see. That’s what matters the most to me. I want nothing more than to become the best me, through the things I’m doing. I love the constant dedication something like this requires. It’s not easy. Whatsoever. But it pays off. Thank you diving, it’s been a hell of a journey so far!”
Originally from Yorkshire, New York, Halford arrived at Indian River State College in fall 2023 as a walk-on diver. As a freshman, Halford was 3rd in both the 1 meter (277.05 points) and 3 meter (276.05 points) at the 2024 NJCAA Championships.
He had a strong sophomore season that included NJCAA titles in both the 1 meter and 3 meter events. He scored a 355.80 in the 1 meter and a 377.55 in the 3 meter. He did not compete during the 2025-2026 season.
Halford joins the Cal men that captured the 2026 ACC team title and went on to finish 7th at the 2026 NCAA Championships. Sophomore breaststroker Yamato Okadome swam to NCAA titles in both the 100 and 200 breaststrokes.
Joshua Thai scored 13 individual points at the 2026 NCAA Championships to lead the diving squad as he was 6th in the platform event with 386.30 points. Geoffrey Vavitsas also represented the diving team at NCAAs as he was 22nd in the platform. Cal had four divers on its roster this past season, with Thai being the only graduating senior.
