WOLCOTT, N.Y. — The only grocery store in the Village of Wolcott in Wayne County has closed earlier than expected.
Save A Lot in Wolcott was set to close on June 20 or when goods sold out, whichever came first, but doors were closed Friday. Calls to the store number are dropped immediately.
Several people stopped by the store Friday to see if it was open, including Jay Garrett. Garrett said it was the only true grocery store around, which makes it difficult for him because he doesn’t have a car.
“It’s hard for myself, for all the people I know, they have no way of getting to the store out of town,” he said. “So we do what we can around here, and that’s all we can do because we have no store now.”
Patricia Sears used to work at the store in the 1970s when it was known as Bob’s Supermarket. She came by to see it while she was in town having lunch with some old classmates.
“I had to drive by to see it, and it’s really sad for the village and all the residents because it’s just so far for a really good grocery,” Sears said.
It’s a bit of a drive to the nearest big box grocery store. The closest Walmart is about 23 miles away, and the nearest Wegmans is about 24 miles away. Hillside Market is one of the closest grocery stores, and it’s about a seven-mile drive to the market from Wolcott.
Garrett said Save A Lot was also convenient for the Reliant ATM in the store. He also said there was a UPS drop-off at the store, so its closure impacts the community in many ways.
“It’s hard for other people that need that money, and you can’t get it because you don’t have an ATM no more,” he said.
