Egypt forms Joint Committee to oversee water footprint in food industry projects ...Egypt

News by : (EGYPT INDEPENDENT) -

Ministers of water resources Hani Sewilam, industry Khaled Hashem, supply Sherif Farouk, and agriculture Alaa Farouk agreed on Thursday 11/6/2026 to form a joint committee to manage the implementation of the “water footprint” concept in food industry projects and to set regulatory standards for water-efficient production.

The decision came during a high-level meeting hosted by the Ministry of Industry, attended by senior officials and representatives of the Federation of Egyptian Industries, the Food Industries Chamber, and the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency.

The committee will be tasked with setting technical codes to classify industrial and food products based on water consumption and economic value added, as well as studying the application of “water neutrality” principles as part of Egypt’s broader water sustainability strategy.

Water Resources and Irrigation Minister Hani Sewilam said Egypt faces an annual water deficit of about 23.2 billion cubic meters, stressing the need to integrate water footprint standards into industrial planning and expansion.

Khaled Hashem called for expanding closed-loop systems in factories and prioritizing high value-added food industries linked to agricultural production zones.

Industry Minister Khaled Hashem said food industries are a strategic priority under Egypt’s Industry Strategy 2030, adding that strict measures will be taken against facilities violating water use and wastewater regulations.

He also noted ongoing efforts to expand wastewater treatment capacity and promote water recycling in industrial zones.

He added that cooperation is ongoing with international partners, including the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), to provide technical and financial support for improving water efficiency in industry.

Supply Minister Sherif Farouq said the food sector plays a key role in food security and economic value creation, highlighting efforts to strengthen supply chains, boost investment, and reduce waste.

Agriculture Minister Alaa Farouq said the initiative reflects closer coordination between ministries to maximize water and agricultural efficiency, linking agricultural production with industrial development, particularly under the “Decent Life” rural development program.

He also highlighted plans to expand the “productive village” model, based on local agricultural advantages, alongside improved marketing systems and stronger integration between agricultural and supply chains.

The Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency said it will support food industry projects through financial, technical and marketing services to enhance productivity and boost exports. (MENA)
