Can We At Least Get Some Positive Injury Updates? Not Really! ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

I’d love to say that I have a bunch of great updates for you on the Cubs’ injury side of things, but that wouldn’t really be true. I could go as far as “mixed,” but that’s probably it.

Let’s start with Matthew Boyd, who experienced some shoulder soreness after his last rehab start (when rehabbing from his knee surgery), and is going to miss more time. How much time is TBD.

"It's his shoulder … We think this is minor, that's the hope, and we can get back on the mound pretty quickly and not lose a lot of time here."Matthew Boyd has been dealing with shoulder soreness and will not start this weekend, per Craig Counsell. pic.twitter.com/jWblckisZR

“I want to be back. I wanted to be back the day after surgery,” Boyd said, per the Sun-Times. “It’s [a result of the increased] workload. Obviously, you see the check-engine light that comes on yesterday. But you look back at the week before, and it’s like, ‘Maybe I should have limited my workload a little more.’ That’s no one’s fault but my own. There was a prescribed plan, I was just feeling so good working through things. There’s something to be said about letting low days be low days.”

The knee is good to go, but this is like an entirely new issue. And however minor Counsell and Boyd seem to suggest it is, shoulders (especially for older pitchers) are always scary. Shutting him down and getting him some rest is obviously the right move, but until he’s actually back up on the mound – a few days? a week? a few weeks? who knows – I don’t think anyone can project anything in terms of timing.

Remember that Javier Assad question from a couple days ago? Well, yup, that’s been answered now. He’ll presumably slot into what would’ve been Boyd’s place in the rotation (where he was returning just as Jameson Taillon went down with a hamstring strain, by the way).

Elsewhere in not great injury update news, Meghan Montemurro had a flurry of info to share:

Cubs injury updates*Jaxon Wiggins (elbow inflammation) throwing live BP, could get into games soon*IF Tyler Austin (knee surgery) not much progress, questionable if back before end of season*Hunter Harvey (triceps) no significant progress*Riley Martin (elbow) playing catch

Jaxon Wiggins has been out for a couple months now, and has been throwing bullpens down in Arizona, according to what we last heard from the front office, for a little while now. Live BP is a step forward from that, so that’s good. You are allowed to feel like this is a good update, depending on your general disposition toward a glass’s fill level.

But “could get into games soon” is not what I personally would’ve been hoping for after two months of a shut down for some elbow inflammation that hasn’t been treated surgically (and hopefully won’t be). Caution is good, again, but it just stinks to see so much time lost. We’ll see when he gets back into a game situation, and then whether he can get in a half season of development – it’s still very important for him to take some command steps forward in advance of 2027, even if him contributing in the big leagues this year is no longer all that likely.

Meanwhile, there’s the answer on the long-standing Tyler Austin question. I guess we can mentally foreclose his return this year, even if it’s still possible. He was a minor signing whose bench spot has been covered capably in other ways, but it nevertheless would’ve been interesting to see how he transitioned back to MLB after raking in Japan. Bummer for him, mostly.

That Hunter Harvey update sure sounds ominous. He’s been shut down since early April, and still isn’t making progress. No idea what that means or how you would project a return. It might just be that the whole “super talented, super high injury risk” thing wound up biting the Cubs.

Lastly, Riley Martin (flexor strain) has been out since April 23, and his recovery timeline was estimated at eight weeks. Playing catch now, as opposed to throwing bullpens, suggests he’s probably going to be a little after that initial estimate, even if things go well from here. You’d love to see him back for a good chunk of the season mostly because he was looking so capable, and it’d be nice to get him some more big league experience ahead of 2027. He’s gotta get healthy first, and then you hope his performance isn’t affected.
