There are a lot of talented headlining and co-headlining musicians set to perform at this year’s San Diego Smooth Jazz Festival, including legends like Lalah Hathaway, Boney James and Bob James.
But one of the other acts likely to be very warmly received over the course of the two-day event at the Rady Shell is one of San Diego’s own, singer-songwriter Rebecca Jade.
Jade, who’s lived in San Diego most of her life, performs on Saturday, the first day of the fest. But even though she’s on the bill, she comes across as enthusiastic about the event as any paying fan.
View this post on InstagramThis is partially because of who’ll be onstage and partly because of where it takes place.
“I can’t believe the festival is upon us already. I’m really excited about it because the lineup is incredible,” she told Times of San Diego. “I love telling people about the Rady Shell because I mean, the space is gorgeous.”
She added, “I just would love people to come and experience the space, because it’s stunning.”
Jade, who said she’s lived in San Diego since she was around 8, won’t be a solo act; she and fellow musician Andrea Lisa will share the stage and perform together. The two released a single, “Feelin’ Free,” in January, and their joint performance this weekend is the next step in their creative partnership.
“Andrea Lisa is an amazing artist,” Jade said. “She is a singer-songwriter, guitar player, producer. She is multifaceted and we have been really enjoying doing a lot of shows together.”
Lisa, who was born in South Africa and raised in New Zealand, currently lives in the Los Angeles area. The two artists met at another jazz festival. Jade said that their performance this weekend will be upbeat.
“I would describe my show and the show that Andrea and I have together as just really beautifully crafted,” she said. “I like to believe that our music is kind of thought-provoking and also (with) beautiful moments of connection with the audience, and also high energy.”
Although mellow vibes come to mind for some people when they hear the phrase “smooth jazz,” Jade said that she and Lisa will defy that categorization with their Saturday set.
“I think you’re going to get a beautifully blended show where people are, we hope, connected with our music, and they just get moving, they wanna dance, they want to stand up, they want to sing along and it’s that kind of a show. That’s what I believe that our show is a lot like.”
Of smooth jazz, she said, “It’s not just this mellow stuff, it’s a beautiful array of music. It’s high energy, it’s really thought provoking, it’s internal, it makes you feel good. I’m pretty sure it’s higher energy and more exciting than maybe you might think.”
As far as Jade and Lisa continuing their musical partnership, maybe via a collaborative album, that’s still up in the air.
“Yeah, that’s a good question. It’s kind of still to be determined,” Jade said. “We’re looking to work together and keep creating and it’s just, (we’re) still not sure what at what capacity or where that’s gonna go. For right now, the song (Feelin’ Free”) is a one off. But we are definitely planning on working on more music together.”
For the time being, the two will be content to bring their music to the Rady Shell to entertain thousands of festival-goers.
“I really look forward,” Jade said, “to connecting with the audience and the people that are there.”
