MOUNT MORRIS, N.Y. — A crowd is gathering at Letchworth State Park on Thursday to catch a glimpse of “Big Boy”, the world’s largest working steam train.
The train, which is on a cross-country tour celebrating America’s 250th birthday, is expected to cross the Genesee River Arch Bridge in the park around 12:20 p.m. Some people got to Letchworth as early as 6 a.m. and booked hotels.

It won’t stop in Letchworth, so many people brought cameras to capture the moment. For some, the train brings back nostalgia.

“My mother and father bought my first train set at 5 years old, which I still have, and it just escalated from there,” said Clarence Davis of Rochester.
“For me, it’s more of a spiritual connection because of my stepdad and my uncle,” said Malcolm Gillespie of Syracuse. “They both took me out on train rides. They took me to derailments. All kinds of cool things as a kid, and I came here alone, but I feel like they’re with me.”
Big Boy also passed through Blasdell in Erie County on Tuesday and was on display near Buffalo on Wednesday. The next stop for Thursday will be the Hornell Erie Depot Museum at 2 p.m.
The train was built in Schenectady in 1941. Letchworth officials told News10NBC they were expecting an increase in visitors on Thursday for the train. This cross-country journey marks the first time the Big Boy has been east of the Mississippi River.
