Fundraiser boosts pride, joy ...Middle East

News by : (TribToday) -

WARREN — Members of the Pride and Joy Today Foundation have spent time raising funds to provide services to local children, including summer intervention programs.

Sher-ree Glover, president of the foundation, said the organization works primarily with youth with a focus on improving literacy. She said fundraisers have taken place to raise funds for tablets and materials to be used by the children.

“Technology is our challenge right now. We do not have enough tablets for the children we serve through TMHA (Trumbull Metropolitan Housing Authority) and Highland Terrace,’’ Glover said.

She said there is a summer program every Thursday evening at Highland Terrace and the tablets are needed for that.

Glover said the 10-week program includes a variety of learning activities all focused on literacy for children ages 3 to 12.

“We have volunteers helping us build that literacy foundation for students. The students will learn to better understand sight words, the English language and how to use compound sentences. The families tell me they appreciate the support,” Glover said.

The goal of the program is to have children be able to pass the Ohio state reading tests in school.

“We want to help children so they are not behind and can make the state standards. We want to review the literacy with them so the skills are not lost over the summer,” Glover said.

In addition to learning, the children also will take part in special activities and events in July and August.

A recent event at Quinby Park featured representatives of different organizations such as Trumbull Neighborhood Partnership, which hosted a free plant giveaway.

Tanisha Howard of Warren, founder of the J43KT Movement, was at the event and said it is a good way to help promote other events and assist local children.

She hosted an event this past weekend where a lilac tree was planted at a community garden at Highland Avenue and Oak Street for former Warren resident Jamelia West, who was found dead along with her three children in 2006 in Columbus in what is believed to be the result of domestic violence. The murders remain unsolved.

“Events like this promote community outreach. There is so much negativity, so to be able to bring the community together for events like this is important. It’s nice to have something positive. Events like this are all about helping the community,’’ Howard said.

Glover said it is important for the Pride and Joy Today Foundation to have partnerships and be in teamwork with other organizations in the community.

Warren resident Virginia Mason, who is a past president of Community Concerned Citizens, said the event at the park was a nice event for the residents. It included a car show, live music, food and basket raffles.

“My son’s truck is here for the show. He also has a food truck here. I like it when the community can come together to help one another,” Mason said.
