Game 3 of the Chapel Hill Super Regional between UNC and USC at Boshamer Stadium Sunday was the most watched Super Regional game on record, according to numbers released by ESPN Wednesday. Approximately 1.3 million viewers tuned in to see the Diamond Heels walk off the Trojans to clinch a Men’s College World Series berth. Total viewership of the game peaked at 1.7 million viewers.

In Game 3 of the Super Regional, UNC trailed the Trojans 3-2 in the bottom of the ninth inning and were two outs away from elimination before mounting a thrilling comeback. Jake Schaffner’s game-tying sacrifice fly and Owen Hull’s walk-off double helped Carolina punch its ticket to Omaha.
Two other Super Regional contests this year also rank in ESPN’s all-time top 10: the 1.2 million viewers who watched Georgia and Mississippi State rank second, while the 1.1 million viewers who watched Texas defeat Oregon ranked sixth.
In total, ESPN reports this year’s Super Regional round averaged 608,000 viewers, a 31 percent improvement from last season. It’s the most watched Super Regional weekend since 2009.
UNC is set to play its opening game at the College World Series Friday at 7 p.m. Eastern time against Ole Miss. The game will be broadcast on ESPN.
