The storm that passed over Chicago this afternoon brought some bad news with it.
According to Meghan Montemurro, Cubs starter Matthew Boyd will no longer be starting this weekend against the Giants in San Francisco. Why? Well, because he suffered a setback in his injury rehab, of course!
Life is funny that way.
To be more specific, Montemurro reports that Boyd is dealing with some “lingering soreness” in his left shoulder, following his second minor league rehab start. As a reminder, this stint on the IL was because of knee surgery. So. Yeah. It’s kind of like this is a new injury.
And you can count me as extremely skeptical about his potential when he returns if he’s already feeling soreness despite all this time off.
Remember, Boyd has made just eight starts so far this season. Five at the big league level and three at the minor league level (one of which was preceding a return from his first trip to the IL).
And for what it’s worth, his first injury was a bicep strain. So … is this a true, new, THIRD injury? I don’t know, and I don’t know that it matters. Whatever luck allowed him to pitch through the entirety of 2025 has clearly run out.
Like I said earlier, this is one miserable, miserable season. And the injuries, while not the only frustrating/ongoing struggle, are clearly a big part of that.
According to Montemurro, the Cubs “believe this is minor,” but I’m not sure there’s any reason to believe that or take any solace in it.
