BUTLER, N.Y. — Two people are facing charges after State Police say they broke into the former Butler Correctional Facility in Wayne County and started fires in one of the buildings.
State Police say it happened on June 3. Troopers got a report that two people went on the property on Westbury Cutoff Road in Butler and started fires inside one of the buildings.
According to investigators, a 17-year-old and 18-year-old went into a maintenance building and started multiple fires using paper and cardboard. Investigators also say the two spray-painted graffiti inside.
Firefighters from the Red Creek Fire Department put out several active fires, State Police say.
Both are charged with burglary. Additionally, the 18-year-old is charged with arson and criminal mischief. State Police say the 17-year-old turned himself in. Both were arraigned, and the 17-year-old was released on his own recognizance.
