ROCHESTER, N.Y. – A Yellow Alert is posted for Thursday for heat and humidity. A Heat Advisory is posted for Monroe, Orleans, Wayne, Livingston and Ontario Counties Thursday afternoon. The combination of air temperatures in the mid to upper 80s and dew points in the lower 70s will make it feel more like the mid 90s for a few hours. The humidity matters, because we cool our bodies through sweating. When the humidity is high, our sweat is less efficient at cooling us, and we have a higher chance of overheating and getting heat-related illnesses. For most, the heat won’t be a problem as long as you take it easy!
Aside from the heat and humidity, we’ll see a fairly quiet day. A few very early showers or thunder move east and we’ll see some hazy sunshine making a return. But again, the humidity will be high with dew points in the lower 70s. There may be the chance of an afternoon storm east of Rochester in the Finger Lakes, but at this point, our storm threat is fairly low.
Friday will be another very warm and humid day, with the potential for more heat advisories, if our cold front holds off long enough. Right now, expect another warm and very humid day into the early afternoon. Despite the arrival of a cold front, our storm chances look low, with the greatest risk of storms (and strong/severe storms) to our east and south. We’ll monitor, as a later arrival of the cold front may impact that.
The weekend starts off beautifully with lots of sunshine and much more comfortable humidity levels building back in. Sunday will feature some rain with another cold front.
