Pallet Express warehouse fire: Owner says damage is in the multi-millions as hot spots continue to smolder days later ...Middle East

News by : (News10NBC) -

News10NBC Chief Investigative Reporter Brean visited the edge of the property where hot spots continued to smolder days after a massive warehouse fire Monday.

The owner of Pallet Express says the damage is in the multi-millions. The warehouse was filled with stacks of wood pallets, which present unique fire hazards.

Pallets: a unique hazard

“Wood pallets present a unique hazard,” Mahoney said.

Shawn Mahoney with the National Fire Protection Association explained that pallets are super dry. “And they’re put together in a way that allows a really good amount of air flow on all sides of that wood. So that combination can make them pretty dangerous and lead to fairly large fires,” Mahoney said.

Strict rules say pallets can only be stacked certain heights. The NFPA recommend 15 feet high. Any higher and they can block water from the sprinklers. City records show zero code violations at the warehouse.

Brean met with the owner of Pallet Express, Frank Cervini, who declined to talk on camera. “He declined to talk on camera because he says he wants to wait until the fire department and the insurance companies end their investigations,” Brean said.

Cervini showed Brean a screenshot of security camera video that shows the fire starting in the back of the building. Days after the fire, several hot spots were still smoldering with billowing smoke visible.

“The owner also told me they’ve had a problem for many years with people getting access to the back of the building along the railroad tracks and trying to start fires right here,” Brean said.

More than pallets were stored at the warehouse. Bundles of recycled plastic were also outside the building on the property. The debris cannot be removed until the insurance investigation is done.

Two pallet fires in 6 days less than a mile apart

The fire department is still working to determine a cause. This marks the second pallet fire less than a mile apart in less than a week. The first involved a stack of pallets outside a warehouse. RFD says a spark from a faulty power line ignited them, and firefighters put it out before it set the buildings on fire.
