The Chicago Bears completed their first day of mandatory minicamp practices on Tuesday. Head Coach Ben Johnson and the defending NFC North champs have two more days of practice ahead of them on the schedule. Let’s take a look at some highlights from the Bears beat.
Jaylon Johnson grabs headlines, interceptions
Seeing Bears cornerback Jaylon Johnson generate some minicamp buzz is a sight for sore eyes:
#Bears CB Jaylon Johnson with 2 picks in minicamp today – one to end a 1st team offense drive in 2-minute drill.
— Brad Biggs (@BradBiggs) June 9, 2026Day 1 of #Bears minicamp is over. Biggest takeaway?Jaylon Johnson looks REALLY good. ?
— Adam Hoge (@AdamHoge) June 9, 2026Back in April, we talked about cornerbacks Jaylon Johnson and Kyler Gordon getting a clean slate going into the 2026 season. Even Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson said that “it’s almost like we’re starting over completely again this spring” when talking about the projected starters. Gordon has been limited during the offseason training program because of injuries. But at least Johnson seems to be rounding into form.
Bears injury watch: Gordon, Stevenson, Edwards, Dayo
The latest on the Bears injury front:
Bears mandatory minicamp practice just wrapped. CB Kyler Gordon remains absent as he deals with a soft tissue injury. CB Tyrique Stevenson walked off with the trainers midway through, limping slightly. LB T.J. Edwards participated in team drills for the first time this spring.
— Sean Hammond (@sean_hammond) June 9, 2026DE Dayo Odeyongbo and LB TJ Edwards both got work in full team drills, an encouraging sign. CB Kyler Gordon was not spotted and his latest injury has robbed him of the majority of the offseason program.
— Brad Biggs (@BradBiggs) June 9, 2026While cornerback Kyler Gordon was reportedly at Halas Hall, the Trib’s Sean Hammond notes that he wasn’t practicing. His Tribune colleague, Brad Biggs, noting that Gordon’s injury issues have “robbed him of the majority” of the offseason training program, is a real bummer. The more time Gordon misses now, the harder he will have to work to rejoin the circle of trust in the secondary. Based on what Ben Johnson has said about Gordon in the past, that climb could be tedious. Sigh. I wish he could just stay healthy.
If you’re a healthy cornerback at Halas Hall, this might be your time to shine. In addition to Gordon’s injury issues, fellow cornerback Tyrique Stevenson missed some practice time with an injury. Biggs saying that it “didn’t appear to be overly serious” has me breathing a little easier. The injury to linebacker D’Marco Jackson is something to keep tabs on, especially since it appears as if he is in a position to nab a starting spot.
AVAILABILITY REMAINS THE BIGGEST CONCERN FOR KYLER GORDON
At least the Bears seem to have some useful depth at those particular positions. Linebackers such as Jack Sanborn and rookie Keyshaun Elliott could benefit from some extra snaps. And I’m sure that I could say the same about Day 3 pick Malik Muhammad and undrafted rookie KC Eziomume. No one makes the team with a strong practice in June, but it could help their case in the long haul.
The good injury news is that defensive end Dayo Odeyingbo and linebacker T.J. Edwards were spotted at practice. Odeyingbo suffered a season-ending Achilles injury against the Bengals and should be motivated to erase what was looking like a disappointing first season with the team, even before his injury. As for Edwards, he went down with an injury during the Bears’ playoff win against the Packers. That he is a participant in practice is encouraging, but not surprising. Edwards has long sounded optimistic about his return to the lineup.

— Clay Harbor (@clayharbs82) June 9, 2026 CHGO’s Adam Jahns gets a whale of a quote from Bears tight end Colston Loveland, who has this to say about 2025 NFL Draft classmate Luther Burden III: “He’s the truth, man. He’s the truth – nothing but the truth. The way he works, his attitude, his mindset, he’s a guy you want on your team, for sure.” From ESPN’s Courtney Cronin (via Twitter/X): “Lots of talk about get off by DLine this offseason. Not an issue for Montez Sweat who burst off the right edge and chased Caleb Williams to the other field.” If this Bears defensive line is going to prove its doubters wrong, it will need an A-plus effort from Sweat.FIND THE BN BEARS PODCAST HERE: Apple | Spotify | YouTube
Rookie receiver Zavion Thomas caught the eye of CHGO’s Mark Carman, Clay Harbor, and Bear Report’s Zack Pearson. They don’t give out awards for balling out during minicamps and OTAs, but it isn’t lost on me that Thomas continues to make plays when given opportunities.More Bears From Bleacher Nation: Go Ad-Free | Subscribe to the BN Newsletter
