No real surprises here on any of the Cubs roster moves, but they are now officially reported and thus worth sharing.
According to Elise Menaker on X, the Chicago Cubs have reinstated Matt Shaw from the Injured List. He had been playing down in Triple-A Iowa, and while I suspect the Cubs would’ve preferred for him to get a little more steady playing time before returning, Kevin Alcantara’s frequent(?) mistakes on the bases, including some really big ones in the last week, likely accelerated that timeline.
So Shaw is back up, and Alcantara is headed back to Iowa. I am not sure that was a very good use of time — not for his development and not for the Cubs to win any games. I have no clue what shape the rest of Alcantara’s season will take, but boy was that a mini-disaster.
As for Shaw, maybe he’ll be able to work in often at second and third, given the struggles the Cubs infield (Alex Bregman, Dansby Swanson, and Nico Hoerner) have all been experiencing. I’d like to see what he can offer, because the rest of the group is just not getting it done right now.
On the pitching side, Jameson Taillon is hitting the Injured List after exiting his last start with a hamstring strain. Given the frequency with which he was allowing home runs, a little rest, reset, and … time away from this team is not the worst outcome.
Javier Assad, who came up the day Taillon started, is likely taking his place in the rotation for now, though Matthew Boyd is on his way. In the meantime, the Cubs have recalled right-handed reliever Ethan Roberts, who has been having a nice season out of the Cubs bullpen.
I don’t think it matters much, but I do think the Cubs are better today, after these roster moves, than they were yesterday. Then again, their problem does not rest on the margins. It’s the core, everyday players struggling most. Gotta right the ship before it’s too late. We’re approaching mid-June, after all….
