ROCHESTER, N.Y. – This is one of those moments when beauty and science come together perfectly: the sunset. Think about how many poems, paintings, photographs, and stories have been inspired by a colorful evening sky. Few weather phenomena capture our attention quite like a spectacular sunset.
Recently, Suzanne from Sodus Point shared a beautiful photograph overlooking Lake Ontario. If you watch my video, you will notice a graphic showing the position of the Sun that helps create those awe-inspiring colors. One of the most important ingredients for a vibrant sunset is the Sun’s location in the sky. When the Sun is high overhead, we do not see those brilliant shades of orange, red, and pink. Instead, the most vivid colors develop when the Sun is very low on the horizon. The exception can occur when smoke from nearby wildfires fills the atmosphere, creating colorful skies even during the day.
For the most dramatic sunset displays, the Sun needs to be near the horizon. At that angle, sunlight must travel through a much greater depth of the atmosphere before reaching our eyes. Along the way, different wavelengths of visible light are scattered. The amount of scattering depends on a variety of factors, including humidity, dust, sea salt, and other tiny particles suspended in the air.
This is why no two sunsets are exactly alike. Small changes in atmospheric conditions can create dramatically different colors and patterns from one evening to the next. Some sunsets feature deep reds and oranges, while others display soft pinks, purples, and golds. Regardless of the color palette, it is always remarkable to watch nature paint the sky at the end of the day. It could be said they serve as a beautiful example of atmospheric science at work.
Sometimes, the most beautiful lessons in science arrive at the close of the day. Here in Western New York, we are fortunate to have countless opportunities to enjoy both the science and the beauty of a spectacular sunset.
