Will Tae Banks be an asset or an afterthought for New York Giants? | The Record

Somewhere between inconsistency and fleeting confidence, New York Giants cornerback Tae Banks lost his way.

Maybe it was attitude, a lack of conviction in his technique or a coaching failure within a defensive system that did not fit his talents as someone who lived and died in press man coverage.

What’s most likely: all of that contributed to where Banks is now, which is in NFL limbo after the Giants brought in John Harbaugh and essentially cleared the decks of both the roster in its entirety and the depth chart, especially in the secondary.

The first throws of minicamp

JAXSON DART, QUARTERBACK. Dart and the first-team offense have not made a lot of wow plays this spring. There have been a lot of throws close to the line of scrimmage. Dart floated a duck into zone coverage on a misread in the ninth OTA practice that fortunately was not intercepted. Their best plays have been running plays. But this also isn’t full contact football with full pads — and the interior defensive line is not good — so it’s hard to tell what that will look like in July. Matt Nagy is installing a new offense. There is a learning curve for any quarterback or offense learning a new system. But the Giants would feel a lot better flying down to West Virginia next month if Dart and the first-team offense could put some better and more consistent reps under their belt — especially down the field — during these few practices.

Who steps up at wide receiver? The Giants won’t have Malik Nabers (knee) or Darius Slayton (core muscle) on the field as they rehab injuries. It will be intriguing to see who can step up in their absence. Is it third-round pick Malachi Fields, who has made a quick impact? Perhaps Odell Beckham Jr. or one of the other two receivers who were signed last week? Or what about free agent signings Darnell Mooney and Calvin Austin III? Maybe it’s even tight end Isaiah Likely or Theo Johnson who emerges as Jaxson Dart’s favorite target? It needs to be someone with Nabers’ return date unknown.

Sean McDermott visited Giants minicamp on Monday | Pro Football Talk

Sean McDermott has said that he’s planning on spending his 2026 speaking with people about leadership in order to grow as a coach. According to multiple reporters on the scene, McDermott was in New Jersey on Monday, attending Giants minicamp.

McDermott walked on the field with New York General Manager Joe Schoen, who previously worked with McDermott with the Bills. McDermott also previously worked with now-Giants head coach John Harbaugh, as they were both assistants with the Eagles under head coach Andy Reid.

23. Giants Sign TE Isaiah Likely.  As more details emerge about Pro Bowl wideout Malik Nabers’ complicated recovery from a torn ACL, Isaiah Likely becomes more valuable to the New York Giants offense. Head coach John Harbaugh told reporters the team doesn’t have a timetable for Nabers’ return. Likely could be Big Blue’s lead pass-catcher in the first month or so of the season.

3. Giants Hire HC John Harbaugh.  John Harbaugh established a winning culture with the Baltimore Ravens for nearly two decades and won a Super Bowl in the 2012 campaign. Sure, his teams had disappointing playoff losses with two-time league MVP Lamar Jackson, but he’ll immediately raise the New York Giants’ standards. Big Blue has two playoff appearances (one postseason win) since its successful 2011 Super Bowl run.
