Multiple rounds of severe weather, flooding possible in Chicago forecast ...Middle East

News by : (NBC Chicago) -

The Chicago area is set for a warm and turbulent week of weather, with multiple rounds of severe storms possible.

In addition to severe storms, there are concerns about the potential for flooding and the risk of extremely warm conditions, with heat indices approaching 100 degrees at least a few times during the week.

Scattered showers and perhaps an isolated thunderstorm or two are expected to persist in the area Monday evening and into Tuesday morning, and temperatures are expected to rise into the upper-80s during the afternoon, according to forecast models.

More isolated showers and storms could form during the afternoon, and more rain is expected to occur overnight, with the entire Chicago area at a “marginal” risk of severe weather Tuesday and into the early stages of Wednesday morning, according to the Storm Prediction Center.

The main threat with any storms that develop will be heavy rain, which could lead to some localized flooding. There is also a chance of some hail according to the Storm Prediction Center, though it isn’t expected the hail will be more than an inch in diameter.

For most of Wednesday the forecast is calling for dry conditions, and things will be warmer as well, with highs rising into the low-to-mid 90s across the area, according to the NBC 5 Storm Team. As dewpoints approach 70 degrees, heat indices could climb as well, with those readings potentially approaching 100 degrees by the afternoon hours.

More thunderstorms are expected to develop Wednesday evening, and the Storm Prediction Center has most of the area at a “slight” risk of severe weather, a higher level than Tuesday’s storms. Some parts of McHenry and DeKalb counties are even at the higher-still “enhanced” risk, with damaging winds, hail and heavy rain all possible.

There is also a non-zero risk of tornadoes, according to the SPC.

Thursday an approaching cold front is going to threaten to bring yet another chance of strong-to-severe thunderstorms, and this event will likely be the most widespread, with potential impacts all around the Chicago area, according to forecast models.

Once again gusty winds, large hail, heavy rain and tornadoes are all possible, though the exact timing of the storms will help to determine how strong they could potentially get.

Once that front passes through, temperatures are expected to begin to drop a bit, with highs in the 80s on Friday and Saturday and then a bit cooler heading into early next week, with readings in the 70s.
