Osama Abu Al-Majd, the defense attorney for Sabri Nakhnoukh, revealed the gravity of his client’s legal situation, particularly following a statement by the Public Prosecution that uncovered Nakhnoukh’s involvement in possessing firearms, antiquities, torture videos, assault, unlawful detention, and sexual assault.
Abu Al-Majd added: “There is no doubt that after the Public Prosecution’s statements today, my client’s position has become exceedingly difficult. We are a nation governed by law; the wrongdoer is punished, and we have no comment on the work or statements of the Public Prosecution.”
He continued: “Our role begins after the referral order is issued. The charges brought against Sabri Nakhnoukh yesterday were one thing, and today they are something entirely different.”
During a phone interview on the program “Alyoum Huna Al-Qahira” (Today Here is Cairo), broadcast on the Modern MTI channel and hosted by journalist Faten Abdel Maaboud, Abu Al-Majd clarified that his representation of Sabri Nakhnoukh originally pertained to charges of thuggery (baltagiya), terrorizing citizens, and stealing a surveillance camera system from a car showroom in New Cairo (The Fifth Settlement). However, he noted that the new accusations have drastically compounded the difficulty of the situation.
He denied having any recent contact with the accused, emphasizing that he has not communicated with his client or any other party since the Public Prosecution issued its statement. He added that he may consider withdrawing from Sabri Nakhnoukh’s defense team following the emergence of these horrific allegations.
The Public Prosecution had ordered the pretrial detention of Sabri Nakhnoukh and the remaining defendants for 15 days pending investigations into charges related to thuggery, violent extortion, assaulting citizens, and possessing unlicensed weapons and ammunition, pending the completion of investigations to uncover the full details of the incidents attributed to them.
The Public Prosecution had received a report from a car showroom owner stating that Sabri Nakhnoukh and others had stormed his establishment due to financial disputes between them, assaulted one of the showroom employees—causing him injuries—and seized the digital video recorder (DVR) of the surveillance cameras.
Upon requesting a police investigation, the incident was verified; it was established that the aforementioned defendant and others spearheaded a criminal gang dedicated to extortion, exercising violent control, making threats, and disrupting public order, using a private security and guarding firm as a front for their activities, and employing funds and weapons to facilitate them.
Consequently, the Public Prosecution ordered the arrest and summons of the defendants, and issued a warrant to search Sabri Nakhnoukh’s residence and affiliated premises.
The defendants were subsequently apprehended and interrogated. The Public Prosecution initially ordered their pretrial detention for four days pending investigation, which the competent court later renewed for an additional fifteen days.
The search resulted in the seizure of the stolen surveillance DVR, alongside two automatic rifles, a submachine gun, a pistol, several blank and air pistols, nearly a thousand rounds of ammunition, five unlicensed communication devices, and ten archaeological artifacts.
Furthermore, a forensic examination and data extraction of the defendants’ mobile phones revealed recordings indicating their commission of kidnappings coupled with sexual assault, unlawful detention accompanied by physical torture, coercion into signing documents, possession of unlicensed weapons, ammunition, and torture instruments, as well as fierce wild animals. Investigations into these incidents are ongoing, alongside parallel financial investigations aimed at tracing the proceeds of their criminal activities.
The Public Prosecution reaffirmed that the rule of law is proceeding firmly on its path, and that the law is above all, with no one exempt regardless of their stature. It emphasized that it will always remain a sanctuary for all and an impregnable fortress for every rightful claimant, allowing the state to assert its authority and protect the rights of citizens without discrimination.
