The Indian cricket team selectors have reportedly asked Shubman Gill to focus on the World Test Championship (WTC) and the ODI World Cup 2027 following their decision to snub him from the T20I squad. The Gujarat Titans skipper, who amassed 732 runs in IPL 2026, failed to find his way back into the shortest format squad after being dropped earlier this year. Gill, who is the captain of the ODI and the Test team, has now been asked to prepare himself for a long season which involves 9 Tests and lots of ODIs before the 2027 WC, and has been asked to stay in shape.

As per news agency PTI, a source claimed that the selectors are concerned that Gill shouldn’t face a burn-out by being a part of all three formats, adding that there were 9 WTC Tests and as many as 35 ODIs to be played before the WC in 2027. The source claimed that Shubman has been asked to stay fit for the two important ICC events. It is pertinent to point out that India need to win 7 out of their 9 remaining Tests in order to fancy a chance of making it to the WTC 2025/27 final.

“The selectors are concerned that there shoudn’t be a burn-out case with Gill. Gill has to lead India in nine WTC Tests and also play around 35 odd ODIs before the start of 2027 World Cup. The communication is clear that he needs to be fit for these two ICC assignments. Plus he will play the IPL where he leads Gujarat Titans,” the report states.

Gill returned to the T20I setup last year in the Asia Cup 2025, replacing Sanju Samson as the opener. However, he was dropped at the start of the year after managing to score just 291 runs from 15 T20Is in 2025. However, his IPL numbers have been phenomenal over the last couple of seasons. In IPL 2025, he scored 650 runs followed by a 732-run season in 2026.

The source added that the BCCI wanted Gill to focus on the immediate future, while noting there were two years left for the T20 World Cup 2028 and the LA28 Olympics.

“There is still a lot of time left for the two marquee T20 events in 2028. For Gill, the focus is on the immediate future. Two years from now, no one knows which player will be in what kind of form and fitness. So this is the plan till 2027 ODI World Cup,” the source added.
