Why head to your nearest big box store when you can scoop up tons of charming vintage finds at flea markets, estate sales and secondhand shops? Interior designers know that, much of the time, used is actually better than new when it comes to purchasing certain pieces for the home. Below, four pros share the top 10 categories of items that they'd rather buy preloved, and why.
1. Artwork
Kirsten Francis
Dusti Jones, the founder of Dusti J Design, is partial to incorporating unique artwork in her projects, and as such, she finds that going the vintage route often yields the best results. "Any piece with amazing shape, details or color can inspire an entire space or simply finish a room," she says. Jones shares that she has been lucky to score beautiful vintage prints as well as originals while going the secondhand route.
2. Decorative Accessories

While you can of course scoop up accessories at a local big box store, Jones finds the options available at such retailers to be overly "expected" and is all for taking an off the beaten path approach instead. While vintage shopping, the designer likes to look for items such as glass marbles (she'll showcase them in a glass sphere), as well as more commonly used pieces such as frames, vases, candlesticks, books and more. "I much prefer these accessories to the mass-produced, cheapened items so often seen today," she says.
3. Lighting
By George Collective
McKenzie Milhousen, the founder of By George Collective, is partial to vintage table lamps in particular. "Patinated metals in hardware or lighting instantly make a space feel warmer and give spaces history," she says. She's always happy to weave one into a kitchen, specifically. "I love placing a vintage lamp on the counter—they also provide a really lovely ambiance when you don't need full task lighting."
4. Rugs

Wood furniture is experiencing a major resurgence, and if you're looking to add a special wooden piece or two to your home, make like Meyer and go the vintage route. In particular, the designer likes to shop for wooden side tables, consoles, dressers and small cabinets secondhand. "They tend to be better made than many newer options, and they introduce character without overwhelming the room," she says.
Meyer finds that vintage wood furnishings pair wonderfully with newer items, too. "I love the mix of an older wood piece against cleaner, more contemporary upholstery or architecture," she says. "You can’t beat it!"
6. Accent Seating

Milhousen is always thrilled to come across a compelling piece of vintage seating. "Vintage accent seating because to me great chairs are like art themselves," she says. Of course, she adds, don't be afraid to take on a bit of revamping if needed. "We usually freshen up the upholstery or maybe add a cushion here or there, but a great vintage chair can really make a space feel storied through their lines, materials and patina," she reflects.
7. Side Tables

You can never have enough trays in your home, whether you're using them for keys, to corral beauty products or jewelry, or while entertaining, and Rudy Arevalo, an interior designer with MacKenzie Collier Interiors, likes to go the vintage route when buying these. "Trays are always an easy find," he says. "Silver, wood, ceramic, glass—for the price they’re usually a deal."
9. Vases

Displaying fresh florals around the home is even more fun when you have a stylish collection of vases from which to choose. Arevalo likes to look for his own vases at thrift stores and yard sales, finding that new options aren't necessarily better than preloved ones.
