ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Rochester Jr. Amerks won’t be competing in the North American Hockey League (NAHL) during the 2026-27 season.
The NAHL announced Friday the team has been granted inactive status by the NAHL Board of Governors for the upcoming season.
In a statement, the team said it reached a mutual agreement that the upcoming season “presents an appropriate opportunity for the organization to conduct a comprehensive review” of operations and long-term strategy.
“This was not a decision made lightly,” the organization said in the statement. “We are incredibly proud of what our players, coaches, staff, billet families, volunteers, and fans have helped us accomplish.”
What does inactive status mean?
According to the team, inactive status means the organization pauses operations for one year while still being a part of the NAHL.
The Jr. Amerks will have the chance to return when the inactive status ends after the 2026-27 season. The team says no decisions have been made beyond the 2026-27 season, and more updates will be given after making that decision.
What does this mean for the players?
The team says all veteran players previously rostered by the Jr. Amerks are considered free agents and can be signed to a tender by another NAHL team. However, these players won’t be eligible for selection in the 2026 NAHL Entry Draft.
All players tendered by the Jr. Amerks for the upcoming season are now also considered free agents and can either be signed by another team in the league or picked in the 2026 Entry Draft.
The Jr. Amerks had their inaugural season in Rochester in 2023.
