Bottles of the popular medicine Gas-X sold nationwide are being voluntarily recalled after it was found they could be contaminated with chemicals.
The recall, from Gas-X maker Haleon, was announced by the Food and Drug Administration June 4. Four lots of 125 mg Gas-X Extra Strength Softgels were recalled, the announcement said, in pill bottles of 120 ct. and 72 ct.
According to the recall, the drugs were recalled due to “potential chemical contamination.” The lots may have come in contact with a “diluted propylene glycol-based coolant” that was leaking from a machine during the packaging process.
“There is a potential that ingestion of the Softgels contaminated with the diluted propylene glycol-based coolant may result in adverse events such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and diarrhea,” the FDA said. To date, no reports of adverse health effects were received.
Gas-X softgels typically taken to relieve pressure, discomfort and bloating from gas bubbles. The softgels come in green capsules, and packaged in boxes with green, blue and grey bands.
The recall applies only to the Gas-X products in the table below. No other lots of Gas-X Extra Strength, Gas-X Ultra, Gas-X Maximum and Gas-X Ultimate were impacted.

Any customers that purchased the products matching the lot number are urged to stop taking the pills immediately and contact the company for return and reimbursement.
“Consumer safety and product quality are our utmost priorities at Haleon,” the company said in a release. “The root cause of the contamination has been identified and repaired. Corrective and preventative actions have been implemented to prevent future recurrence.”
Haleon is the maker of other popular medicines, including Advil, Theraflu and Tums.
