Since we’re all buzzing with blockbuster trade hopes in the wake of Dylan Larkin reportedly requesting a move out of Detroit, an interesting nugget from David Pagnotta at The Fourth Period on a trade that would have sent (popular Blackhawks trade target) Matthew Knies to… Montreal before this year’s trade deadline. Pagnotta wrote:
“in exchange for Knies, the Canadiens were going to send highly-touted prospect Alexander Zharovsky … another top prospect and two first-round draft picks to Toronto.”
Zharovsky was a second-round pick (No. 34 overall) by Montreal in the 2025 NHL Draft. He’s signed in the KHL thru the 2026-27 season. Scott Wheeler had him ranked No. 3 in Montreal’s pipeline in his spring updated rankings. So we’re looking at a top-tier prospect, another piece and two first-round picks as something Toronto reportedly entertained… under the previous front office. Keep that in mind moving forward for our regularly scheduled “Blackhawks should send this package to Toronto” comments.
Montreal general manager Kent Hughes alluded to a significant trade that fell thru before the deadline at media day before the Stanley Cup Final. Max Bultman wrote a terrific piece at The Athletic on how Larkin’s trade request changes everything this summer for the Red Wings. Yesterday I wrote about how the top four picks in the 2026 NHL Draft are becoming more uniform in mock drafts. A very strong case has been made that a few defensemen could be the best in this class — highest ceiling, highest floor, safest, most likely to be a No. 1 defenseman, etc. — but it appears the consensus is that right-handed Chase Reid is the best in the class. Scott Powers chatted with him at the NHL Draft Combine in Buffalo. Nice read here from Scott on a defenseman who might be the best player available when the Blackhawks are on the clock at No. 4 overall. If the top three forwards are gone when the draft gets to the Blackhawks at No. 4, defenseman Chase Reid might be the best player available. I sat down with Reid yesterday in Buffalo to get to know him t.co/332LqkD2SY
— Scott Powers (@ByScottPowers) June 5, 2026 Powers also reported the Blackhawks are once again not taking prospects out for dinner during the Combine. To be clear: that doesn’t mean they aren’t meeting with them. Players have individual meetings with organizations during the day. The Hawks haven’t done the meal plan for a few years now. I really don’t see this as a big deal (though some will, of course). What a game in the Stanley Cup Final last night! This has been one helluva series thus far. Seth Jarvis ended Game 2 almost four minutes into overtime with this power play goal, but that came after an insane final ten minutes of regulation in which the Canes scored three straight goals to erase a 2-0 deficit, only to see Mark Stone tie it with 81 seconds left. The first two games of this series have had everything.Credit where it's due: Sean McDonough absolutely nails the call on the game-winning goal pic.twitter.com/ZFn9w38XUs
— Ben Pope (@BenPopeCST) June 5, 2026 Time for a friendly reminder that the Blackhawks need to take No. 28 out of circulation and retire it for Steve Larmer. It’s decades overdue. There is a lot of smoke around the Oilers trying to dump Darnell Nurse this summer. I wish them the best of luck. Finally, the NHL announced Minnesota Wild forward Marcus Foligno is this year’s winner of the King Clancy Memorial Trophy. And he received it as a surprise from… his brother, former Blackhawks captain Nick, who won the award in Columbus. Pretty cool to see one former winner present it to his brother.& now both of their names sit on this one pic.twitter.com/wiJXbHti7D
