FAIRPORT, N.Y. — A Fairport tradition returns on Friday. North Main Street will once again be filled with live music, arts vendors, food vendors, and other festivities for the 49th annual Fairport Canal Days. The free festival runs through Sunday.
With the recent fights at the Lilac Festival, Ontario Beach Park, and Fairport’s bar and restaurant district in April, how do festival organizers plan to keep people safe? Organizers say they’ve hired private security, and police and deputies will increase patrols over the weekend. As News10NBC has covered, the Village of Fairport recently picked a new police chief and is working to fill two open officer positions.
Unlike last year’s festival, people don’t have to worry about construction along North Main Street for a bridge replacement project over Thomas Creek. That construction impacted traffic, but it wrapped up in November, restoring full access to businesses in the area.
A look at the vendors
Over 150 arts, crafts, and food vendors will be Fairport Canal Days this year. The Fairport Perinton Merchants Association organizes the festival to promote small businesses across the region. You can see a full list of vendors here. The festival will feature a juried art competition.
RJ’s Gourmet Buffalo Sauce is one of this year’s vendors. The owner, Rich Payalotto, said his son inspired him to commercialize the sauce he’s been making for years.
“RJ was born with autism. He’s a great guy, and he’s 30 years old now, and he just pushed me to do it. I never thought I would do this. I had been making this stuff for 35 years,” he said.
