PENFIELD, N.Y. (WHEC) — Penfield lacrosse goalie Mason Schembri has nearly 700 career saves and knows the secret to dominating in net is accepting that some shots will get through.
“There’s always goals in a lacrosse game. I’ve had one shutout in my career and I’ve played since I was five, four years old. Just knowing that goals are going to go in and I gotta rally around my guys that are going to build me back up for the next shot,” Schembri said.
And that rings especially true when you have a great defense around a great goalie.
“Your defense definitely reflects how you play and I think I gotta good group of guys out there. But it’s nice to be in that spot and know that my teammates trust me to make the save or be their leader,” Schembri said.
News10 NBC Sports Reporter Mat Mlodzinski put Schembri to the test with 10 shots from about 15 yards out. Schembri saved all 10.
With a shot-stopper like Schembri in goal, Penfield made it to the State Tournament once again. For Schembri and most of the squad, this is their last chance at a State banner.
“Last year I feel like when we lost I realized, wow, it’s my junior year, I only have one more chance. Now I’m a senior. Now we have 19 seniors on the largest roster in Section V and I feel like it’s go time,” Schembri said.
“The goal is to win a State Championship. I know last year you talked about how we don’t have one right now. That’s the goal,” he said.
