News10NBC’s Erin Mahon spoke with Montgomery’s father, younger sister, aunt, and a cousin over the phone.
Family remembers Montgomery
Through tears, Montgomery’s father said how much he missed her. Her cousin said family gatherings haven’t felt the same.
The family described Majesty as “the biggest,” the loudest, and brightest person in the room. She had a beautiful soul and was the kind of person who didn’t hold grudges.
“She loved, loved, loved, her family. Her siblings, um she was the oldest of all her siblings on both sides. She was a protector, for sure,” a family member said.
“I miss my sister, so much. She was everything to me, she did everything for me, everything,” her younger sister said.
“My baby loved — like, she was loved,” another family member said.
“Just everything — her jokes, her energy. All we got left now is pictures and videos and just old memories that we can reminisce on. That’s all we got left — just pictures and memories,” a family member said.
As a close-knit family, they said it’s hard experiencing life without her. They were dealing with police discovering her body, and when the news broke publicly Wednesday, it meant reliving the nightmare all over again.
Majesty’s family already had her funeral at the end of May.
More about the case
Investigators announced they found Montgomery’s body buried several feet underground in Yates County, marking the third murder victim found buried in the county over the last ten years.
Police said the medical examiner’s office ruled Majesty’s death a homicide. Investigators believe she was murdered in the city and then buried in the town of Starkey, more than an hour away.
Other homicide cases in Yates County
Craig Rideout was found in a tarp in the town of Jerusalem back in 2016. Sam Nordquist was found in a field in Benton in February of last year.
All three of these cases started outside of Yates County. Sheriff Frank Ryan said the people of Yates are upset.
“I think, when they’re looking for places to place people, they’re looking for rural areas that they feel they’re not going to be observed on the roads. Open fields are great places to do that kind of thing,” Ryan said. “What they’re not realizing is that those are people’s lives and farms and it’s a traumatic experience for somebody to come across something like this.”
Ryan said the department increased its availability and is always looking at new technology to put in, like license plate readers. But deputies can’t be everywhere at all times, so he stressed the importance of “if you see something, say something.”
Police say the investigation into Montgomery’s homicide is ongoing. They’re not releasing details about how she died yet, but say there is a person of interest they’re looking at.
