BRIGHTON – Drug overdose deaths in Monroe County are trending downward, and the county is continuing its efforts to keep that number falling.
In 2024, 292 people died from drug overdoses in Monroe County. As of last month, an estimated 59 people have died about halfway through 2026.
Alfonsina Desino, a member of the county’s Addiction Services Impact Team, said her own past experiences drove her to join the team.
“When I was in active use and homeless, we didn’t have any outreach groups, groups coming out into the community to even let us know that there were resources available to them,” Desino said.
Desino said being homeless became her inspiration and passion to join the Impact Team and help others in need.
“We meet people where they’re at,” she said. “We provide them not only with harm reduction supplies but with compassion and non-judgment resources, letting them know that there is help out there.”
More than 600 naloxone boxes have been installed throughout the county at no cost. Boxes found at indoor locations also carry fentanyl and xylazine test strips, which allow people struggling with drug use to test what they are taking.
Monroe County Director of Addiction Services Tisha Smith said the Impact Team is out in the community every day at homeless encampments, shelters and community organizations.
“I’m extremely proud of the fact that we were able to create this team. We originally started with six people that were doing all of the functions of our department, and we have grown to a team of about 26,” Smith said.
The Impact Team also helps businesses train employees in naloxone use. Monroe County is using opioid settlement funds to pay for services like the naloxone boxes, so there is no cost to taxpayers.
“We’re extremely proud of our work. And we’re fortunate enough that we’ve been able to grow and do more things in our community,” Smith said.
