NEW YORK — A year after Gov. Hochul formally apologized to the Seneca Nation for the state’s role in running an indigenous boarding school, Seneca leaders say there’s been limited meaningful follow-through.

The nation is suggesting the state fund a Seneca language immersion school. In 2022, Buffalo Toronto Public Media reported there were fewer than 50 fluent Seneca speakers left.

The boarding school Hochul apologized for was the Thomas Indian School on Seneca land. It was part of a system of schools that once existed across the U.S., designed to assimilate Native children by separating them from their families and cultures.

“The state spent a lot of money here to try to take away our language, to take away our culture, our heritage and all that. And I think today’s world in 2026, they need to invest the same type of money here to restore our language and our culture in a way that can carry forward generations from now,” said J.C. Seneca, president of the Seneca Nation.

The Seneca Nation estimates the language immersion school could cost 15 million dollars.
