News10NBC’s Garrett Chan caught up with police to learn how they’re ensuring this doesn’t happen again. The vandalism occurred at Saint Francis Cemetery, where police say a group of teenagers smashed statues on headstones and threw personal items into the woods near Summit Street Road.
“Staff for the cemetery did a good job picking all that up and turning it over to us. And we’re working now with the things that are salvageable. Getting that back to the families,” Detective Kaden Vangalio said.
Vangalio says they got a dozen reports of damage spanning late Saturday night into Sunday morning. Denise Spadaccia is the cemetery’s manager.
She says she’s grateful for how fast police tracked down the suspects and for the steps being taken to protect the cemetery.
“I’m sure we’re going to meet with the trustees. And whether it’s, you know, tree cameras or something. I don’t have the answers to that yet. For now, I’m very grateful that the police department is going to increase their surveillance. More runs through as far as the patrol cars,” Spadaccia said.
People who stopped by the cemetery to check their loved ones’ gravesites say they’re on high alert.
“We feel terrible for everyone else as well. That was affected. It’s so disgraceful. And discussing that even our loved ones can’t be respected,” Jenn Robinson said.
Vangalio says police will increase security after closing hours, but don’t plan on installing other security systems.
“After speaking with management from the cemetery, I think they’d like to keep cameras out of it because it’s a private place. People paying respects. Their loved ones. I don’t think they, It would be beneficial to keep it private, you know?” Vangalio said.
While the criminal investigation has wrapped up, police are working to bring damaged or missing items back to the correct gravesites. They’ll be posting pictures of the items on their Facebook page, linked in this story.
The cemetery says if your loved one’s gravesite was damaged, you can send pictures to them.
