NEW YORK STATE — New Yorkers can now share their thoughts on the state’s new Medical Aid in Dying law, which is set to take effect in August.
The public comment period began Wednesday and runs through Aug. 3. The law will allow terminally ill New Yorkers with less than six months to live to request medication to end their lives.

“Medical aid in dying addresses deeply personal decisions that may arise for individuals facing a terminal illness and their loved ones,” State Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald said. “This legislation reflects years of thoughtful planning and consideration, and the Department is committed to implementing the law thoughtfully and responsibly. As the effective date approaches, it is important that New Yorkers have the opportunity to review and understand measures designed to provide dignity and comfort at the end of life.”
Governor Hochul signed the law back in February, after adding revisions that included several safeguards. Patients would need to make an audio or video recording requesting medical aid in dying and undergo a complete mental health evaluation, among other requirements.
