NEW YORK STATE — If you’ve never camped before, here’s your chance to give it a shot. New York State is offering free camping weekends this summer for New Yorkers who have never camped before.
The program provides a fully stocked campsite at select state campgrounds for designated weekends this summer. Participants will get a tent, sleeping bags, sleeping pads, camp chairs, a lantern, and firewood.
The Department of Environmental Conservation’s (DEC) website says a “Camping Ambassador” will meet campers to help set up and give a “camping 101” lesson. Campers can learn to fish, go hiking, go bird watching and paddling, and learn from the experts.
The program is only available to those who live in New York and space is limited. The DEC says campers will be randomly selected.
