In 1703 Andrew Fletcher, a Scottish politician and patriot, wrote “If a man were permitted to make the ballads, he need not care who should make the laws of a nation.”
As ballads are stories set to music it’s my contention this powerful truth holds for stories as well. When people see themselves in a shared narrative, their inclination is to codify their character in laws that nourish their sense of self.
It’s a great opportunity for politicians to become leaders, to tell us optimistic stories about the future that portray us at our best and explain how their governance and policy making will cultivate those best qualities.
