Late last week, we wrote about how the Tennessee Titans need cornerback Cor’Dale Flott to meet expectations. Flott was one of three free-agent cornerbacks general manager Mike Borgonzi signed to revamp the position. The other two were Joshua Williams and Alontae Taylor.
Borgonzi committed more than $300 million in free agency in an aggressive mission to raise the competitiveness level of a team that’s endured consecutive three-win seasons. Among all the additions, Taylor ranked second in average annual value ($19.3 million) and third in overall contract value ($58 million). The Titans definitely need Taylor to meet the expectations attached to that contract.

There’s a local connection that immediately makes Titans fans want to root for Taylor. He hails from Winchester and went to high school in Manchester. Finally, Taylor played college football for the Tennessee Volunteers.
Taylor was a diverse athlete for the New Orleans Saints throughout the course of his four-year rookie contract. He played both inside and outside as needed, moving around the boundary and nickel with versatility. In Tennessee, new head coach Robert Saleh will play Taylor as a starting cornerback outside opposite fellow high-priced signing Flott.
The Titans don’t have much depth at outside corner behind Taylor and Flott. Marcus Harris will defend the slot. Williams is the top backup option with the most experience. Sophomore Micah Robinson, and a slew of undrafted free agents are battling for roster spots.
That lack of depth is why the Titans need Taylor healthy and productive. They’re invested big in his services, though the three-year term removes long-term pressure. Coach Saleh believes in Taylor’s ability to defend outside, and Titans assistant GM Dave Ziegler was briefly with the player in New Orleans.

Pro Football Focus assigned Taylor a stellar grade of 67.7 in coverage for his play this past campaign. He totaled a hefty 1,056 snaps on defense. The Titans need that performance + availability to justify the contract.
