At least 9 arrests reported after ‘teen takeover' in Naperville ...Middle East

News by : (NBC Chicago) -

After warning over the weekend of the potential for “teen takeovers,” Naperville police say at least nine teens were arrested Monday.

In addition, nearly three dozen citations were issued by police as groups of teens gathered in the downtown area on Monday afternoon and into the evening hours, with teams of law enforcement deployed to keep the peace.

According to a press release from Naperville police, the gatherings were mostly focused on Washington Street between Chicago and Van Buren, and officers were sent to the area to maintain control of the situation and to maintain safety.

As the evening moved along, some teens began to cause disturbances, and officers ended up making multiple arrests and issuing citations.

Among those arrested were four adults and five juveniles, including a 23-year-old Naperville resident who was arrested on four outstanding warrants, as well as obstructing a peace officer, according to authorities.

An 18-year-old from Romeoville was arrested for attempted aggravated assault of a peace officer, while another was arrested for battery and obstructing a peace officer.

The juveniles in the case were arrested on a variety of charges, including battery, assault, illegal possession of cannabis, obstructing identification, and disobeying peace officers.

The “teen takeover” trend has been prevalent in Chicago in the late stages of spring and has officials debating how to address the issue, and the arrival of such “takeovers” in suburbs has departments on notice.

“We’ve been very clear on our stance. We want people to come to our city, patronize our businesses, and enjoy all the amenities Naperville has to offer. But if you break the law, there will be no warnings; there will be no second chances,” Chief Jason Arres said in a statement. “We’ve tried that approach, and it was met with a lot of disrespect and lawlessness. So, as last night proved, we will not hesitate to make arrests and issue citations for breaking the law. I want to thank our officers for their incredible teamwork and professionalism, the additional agencies that responded to assist, and our community for their trust as we work to keep Naperville safe.”
