A popular coffee shop and bakery in a northwest Chicago suburb unexpectedly closed its doors, with little warning to customers and staff.
Elder + Oat in West Dundee announced on social media over the weekend that it had served its last latte and baked good.
“Elder + Oat has officially closed its doors. This was not something we saw coming with much time to prepare, and we know this news is hitting a lot of people unexpectedly today,” the shop wrote on Instagram.
No details were given on the unexpected closure, but staff members commented that the closure was even a surprise for them.
“I am heartbroken to lose the best job I’ve ever had.. I cannot thank the amazing baristas, bakers, ownership and especially the community for making Elder and Oat such a success!” one employee wrote, adding that “none of us” knew the closure was coming.

The closure marks the latest in a series of businesses to close their doors in West Dundee.
In March, neighboring restaurant El Pato Loco also closed its doors, promising a new concept could come to the space.

For Elder + Oat, which opened in 2021, was related to the first store to open in West Dundee in 1835.
“To our incredible staff, thank you. You showed up every single day and gave this place everything you had. You took care of our customers, you took care of each other, and you made Elder + Oat what it was. We are grateful for every single one of you,” the store wrote. “To our community, thank you. Thank you for every visit, every kind word, and every moment you spent with us. You made this more than a coffee shop. You made it a home. Elder + Oat will always hold a very special place in our hearts.”
