ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The George Eastman Museum is implementing new policies on taking photographs on museum property.
Why is the policy changing?
On its website, the museum said its ground has become a popular setting for photographing special occasions such as proms, engagements, graduations, and other special events, drawing hundreds of people.
The museum says the updated policies will help protect and maintain the museum gardens and grounds, ensure every visitor can enjoy a peaceful and memorable experience, and offer an “orderly environment” for people reserving times to photograph special events.
Policy for professional (paid) photography
The museum says any paid photography of couples, individuals, groups, or any other commercial photography on museum property will only be allowed with a pre-approved paid reservation.
Photographers will be able to make reservations to take photos at specific locations, such as the West Garden, during a certain time.
Policy for non-professional (unpaid) photography
For unpaid photography, the museum says it encourages visitors to take photos of their visit during museum hours, as long as it doesn’t disrupt other people’s experience.
The museum says any photography for proms or balls will only be permitted with a pre-approved paid reservation. Any other special event photography will also only be allowed with a pre-approved paid reservation.
Making reservations
Reservations can be made to take photos outside or inside the mansion. One hour outside is $400, and one hour in the mansion is $600, according to the museum website.
For more information on reservations, contact the Special Events office at 585-327-4888. The museum says it will not take reservations via email.
