A neglected dog discovered in Chatham County is on the path to recovery after he was rescued by the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office in early May.
Mr. Pickles, a 6-year-old cocker spaniel, was first found on May 7 by sheriff’s deputies conducting a wellness check at a home in the northern part of the county. Upon entering the home they discovered a deceased resident, three other neglected dogs, and Mr. Pickles, who was trapped in a closed closet. The cocker spaniel had significantly matted fur, a “heavily soiled protective cone” that had fused to the dog’s body and signs of infection.
According to the sheriff’s office, Chatham County investigators and Department of Social Services personnel tried to find family members of the deceased who could take custody of the dog, but were unsuccessful. The pup was ultimately moved by the Chatham Sheriff’s Animal Resource Center into the care of Longleaf Animal Rescue in Hillsborough, which specializes in helping rehabilitate and provide medical care to rescue dogs.
“This is the worst neglect case we have ever seen,” Longleaf Animal Rescue Founder Mary Lucas said in Monday’s release about Mr. Pickles. Lucas came up with the name for the cocker spaniel after rescuers were not able to determine what he had previously been named.
Lucas has been sharing Mr. Pickles’ journey of recovery on Longleaf’s social media pages. The dog was first sedated for hours of significant grooming work by VEG ER for Pets in Chapel Hill to remove the matted fur. Mr. Pickles also underwent surgery to remove a tumor from his ear and treat a longstanding infection, with Lucas saying on May 31 that the infection has healed and the tumor was benign.
When Mr. Pickles was first rescued, Lucas said he was scared of human contact and growled at anyone touching him. But since working with the dog to learn more normal behavior and human care, she has shared on social media how the cocker spaniel has become affectionate, happy and more trusting. His turnaround is so remarkable, she told the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office, that the hope is Mr. Pickles could be adopted by someone who is patient and willing to work with his ongoing medical challenges.

“Seeing a dog like Mr. Pickles begin to come out of his shell after everything he’s endured really says a lot about the resilience animals have,” said Kate Reardon, a program coordinator for the Chatham Sheriff’s Animal Resource Center. “That ability to bounce back is remarkable.”
In its release, the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office thanked both VEG ER for Pets and Longleaf Animal Rescue for their partnership and care in Mr. Pickles’ case. Additional updates on Mr. Pickles can be found on Longleaf Animal Rescue’s social media, while other animal rescue and adoption cases from Chatham County can be found on the Chatham Sheriff’s Animal Resource Center Facebook page.
