IRONDEQUOIT, N.Y. — Pre-trial hearings continued Thursday for two brothers accused of killing a family of four in Irondequoit in August 2024. Julio Cesar Pimental Soriano and Luis Francisco Soriano face multiple charges, including first-degree murder, for the deaths of a couple and their two young children.

What happened?

The bodies of Fraime Ubaldo, 30; Marangely Moreno-Santiago, 26; and their children Evangeline Ubaldo-Moreno, 4, and Sebastian Ubaldo-Moreno, 2, were found in the basement of a Knapp Avenue home on August 31st, 2024

Chief Scott Peters said the family was targeted.

“This was a horrific scene,” he said. “In almost 32 years of doing this job, I’ve never seen anything like it.” Police and fire responded to the home around 5:30 a.m. after someone called 911 and reported a fire. During a search of the house, they found the victims, who have lived there for about two to three years.

“Due to the condition of the bodies, it was readily apparent that this was going to be a homicide investigation,” Peters said.

Prosecutors said the Sorianos set the family’s Knapp Avenue house on fire after the killings. Police found the bodies in the basement of the home when responding to the fire.

Wayne County District Attorney Christine Callanan, who is serving as the special prosecutor for the case, said much of the pre-trial arguments focus on police conduct during the investigation.

“The defendants have the right to challenge the evidence, the manner in which it was collected and how law enforcement conducted themselves, which both are doing in this case,” Callanan said.

She said prosecutors believe all actions taken by law enforcement during the investigation were proper. Julio Soriano was arrested a week after the murders. He was indicted on murder, burglary, arson and kidnapping charges and pleaded not guilty in court. Luis was arrested in June 2025.

U.S. Marshals said teamwork between officials in New York State, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic led to the arrest.

According to Marshals, Luis fled to Puerto Rico after the murders, then traveled by boat to the Dominican Republic after learning officials were looking for him.

Callanan said the family has attended every court appearance. “This case has been pending for almost two years, and they look forward to actually getting to the trial, hearing the evidence and reaching some type of conclusion,” Callanan said.

The court will address final arguments regarding motions on June 17. Additional rulings on trial motions are scheduled for July 29. Jury selection is set to begin August 19.

Today News10NBC’s Adelisa Badzic went by the home on Knapp Avenue. There is still a vigil set up for the family of four. There is a notice from the Irondequoit Fire Marshall saying the residence is not to be occupied. According to Zillow, the property is scheduled to be sold at a foreclosure auction.
