ALBANY, N.Y. — As New York State’s first cell-phone-free school year wraps up, the results are in from a statewide survey of nearly 600 teachers on what they thought.

Around 80% of teachers said the cell phone ban had a positive impact on their school, in a survey that the governor’s office conducted. In addition, 75% reported an improvement in their ability to teach. The survey comes a year after a state law banned smartphones, smartwatches, personal earbuds, headphones, tablets, personal laptops, and gaming devices in the classroom, with some exceptions such as emergencies or medical monitoring.

On the other hand, a nationwide study on several states that implemented cell phone bans showed mixed results. The study showed that the bans have had a minimal impact on academic scores, attendance, attention, and bullying.

So far, at least 37 states and D.C. have passed laws requiring school districts to restrict students’ phone use. Rush-Henrietta Superintendent Dr. Barbara Mullen spoke with News10NBC, saying the nationwide survey is reflective of her school district in many ways.

“I would say that our numbers are tracking pretty similarly. Particularly as it pertains to, you know, how students are really achieving in class, their focus, their attention, and then those particular areas, I think that’s something we’ve been pretty consistent around. Rush Henrietta is a district that performs above the state in a lot of achievement areas,” Mullen said.
